Project Ideas

I was thinking for my project to either go in a direction of college sports and the scholarships students receive or how different degrees fair in the job market. I was curious to see how colleges expand the degrees they offer to recruit prospective students especially since colleges are becoming more privately funded. I also wanted to see what degrees were the most successful after college, what degrees made the most amount of money, and how graduate school affected how much money you could make on average more than just a bachelors degree.

  1. You will have to give this more thought, since there is not much of a project suggested here. With both topics, you are only suggesting looking up some facts. A project should be driven by a larger research question.

There have been many articles over the years on earnings and degrees. Here is a recent one from Forbes:
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/susanadams/2013/09/20/the-college-degrees-with-the-highest-starting-salaries/
However, everybody knows the big money is in Finance... :-)

The facts and figures related to salary, though, are easy to obtain. The tougher question is how do you turn it into a project? You might look into how much these salary figures are known, and how much they influence the decision to go into a particular field. My own sense is that salary cannot be the main driver of major choice, since high salaries usually reflect relative labor scarcity which drives up the price of labor. If everyone were flocking to Petroleum Engineering, they would not have to pay quite so much for recent grads in Petroleum Engineering. And many of the top paying professional degrees require a high level of skill and knowledge in a STEM subject area, so it is a hard major to complete. Or it could be a lack of information.

Give it some more thought. What is the project related to salaries and majors?

As for the sports topic, that needs work also. We have had a large number of sports projects over the years, and you might scroll down the sidebar of our site to find their blogs and get a sense of possible projects.
